John 2 questions: How long did this take to do these 4 boxes and what would you sell them for if sold retail price online compared to your final workbench cost? What is a rule of thumb for wholesale cost to retailer of a whisky business and an experienced woodworker like yourself doing this exact same product? Currently got asked to do such a project for the same design and hardwood material versions and need some guidance after showing the client a mock 3/8” plywood version with buttjoints, pins and glue joinery that I did and quoted but they wanted the other side of this spectrum too? Any info would be helpful.

Not sure how those prices compare to what i was charge in glasgow uk a few months ago. American white oak kiln dried was retailing at just under £1000 per meter cube. 15 lengths at 2.5m long by 28mm thick width ranging from 12" to 18" wide. Cost £440. American black walnut was double the price of oak.

This will be a good video John I have the cheap ones there actually not to bad to be fair I don't carve enough to justify the kutzal ones and they won't sponsor me so cheap ones all the way. Another one if you've not got it is one with what looks like 3 blades on a solid dish style they move material quick 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

Hi, John, nice to see you back, may I suggest that if you do this again forstner drill in various places to the different depths, takes the guess work out and also helps prevent wear on the discs.

That oak board is 20 board feet, so you're paying about 11.5 euros per board foot, or about $12.35 / bf. I live in North Carolina, US - a local company is selling 8/4 white oak at $9.50 / bf - but not necessary 12" wide. White oak currently costs about the same as walnut.

Btw Ash is a bit cheaper and by quality of wood and appearance very close to oak. I managed to build 2x nice nightstands at €250 wood cost but that was 2 years ago.

Prices are absolutely joke especially in Ireland. What can you build from that 1 oak board? Shelf unit? 😂😂😂 Every time i see US youtubers woodworkers using beautiful walnut which is probably 2x more expensive than oak i.m like: i.ll stick with used pine. Thanks 😂

That sounds crazy even by the crazy Scandinavian standards I'm used to. Inflation seems to be hitting all the stuff I love most (e.g. wood, meat) hardest ... would be nice if it can turn its attention to vegetables and other stuff I don't care for;-)

Been selling timber 24 years. That's a good price on 12x2 oak. Especially if its a decent piece .

I bought a cnc back in 2020 used for about year but had to stop because I couldn’t afford 100 quid a sheet for some half decent 12mm but it came back down but still haven’t been able to get back in to it

My wife would not be happy if I came home with such expensive wood for my hobby 😅

That is a crazy price for oak and its less than 2 cubic feet 🤬, i generally get my hard wood from a local mill and its never that expensive even after the kiln .

The price of wood up here is ridiculous aswell. Even construction wood/plywood last time priced ply was £56 a sheet for 12mm stuff 😲🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

There has to be an end point to this gouging of wood prices. We feel it here in Australia too.

Lovely stuff, I think give this a try. Never thought of making a big bowl that shape before. I have an Arbortech Turboplane disc for my grinder. They are worth a look if you're doing more of this kind of carving work in the future. Slightly bigger chips and less dusty but still an outside job!

didn't see any "carving" I saw a lot of hand planing and grinding though. i'm sure true carvers would have something to say about that. Nice project though.
